I recently started a job that required a HS diploma.
Could not find anything else at the company (and I have three masters degrees). Any suggestions? My "dream" job was as an engineer and would be happy to work in related work.
Keep working there until you find a suitable role within or outside this organization. No skills are lost, no matter the position.
Best of luck!
Is the company you're at currently somewhere you want to work long term? Your current job doesn't seem like a good fit, so is there a way you can transfer into another area while you wait for an engineering job to open up? You don't say what your degrees are in, but do you have the background and qualifications/certifications to work as an engineer (at this company or other places)? If you're missing something like a certificate, can you get one (either through education or experience)? If you've got all the typical skills/degrees/certs you need, contact a recruiter that specializes in engineering jobs to help you find something that fits your skill set. Tailor your resume to fit the jobs you want, emphasizing the degree and skills needed for that job only. Work with a career coach or a counselor from your most recent degree program to help polish your resume and interviewing skills. They can also assist you in finding jobs more to your skill level and interest areas. Don't stay in the job you have any longer than you have to - good luck with your search!
Did they hire you into this job with the intention of getting you in the company and moving you up within a short time? Most companies wouldn't do this that's why I'm thinking they have a game plan. Ask at your 60 or 90 day review, or sooner if appropriate. Depending on the answer, you have have your answer to the first question.
I have a bully bad mouthing me. There will never be a good review - except they can't find people to do the job!
I told them that I was in to move. After three months - and serious injury- I am ready to leave this environment. Toxic, hospital setting.
keep searching for your dream job and send resumes while working.
Could you tailor your resume with different versions that make you look less like a professional student and more like a specialist? Perhaps not include all three of the degrees for a position that only benefits most from one? Sometimes there is such a thing as too much education from the standpoint of fitting a job. It could read as too expensive and too indecisive rather than go-getter. OR...someone who takes jobs in order for her employer to help pay for educational pursuits. It's about managing perception and branding yourself.
3 masters degrees is impressive! I suppose if you want to put them to work in something more challenging though, you'll need to keep looking with other companies for any opening positions :)
No suggestions as you accepted an entry level position requiring a High School diploma. You are more than qualified.
The company clearly does not have any openings for a candidate holding 3 Masters Degrees.
Major research medical center. I miss one pre-requisite and they would not consider me. 20 applications later and there is a bonanza hiring...patient care, nights, neuro unit.
Is the position you took with your "dream" company?
What may have been a "dream" has become a nightmare. The background check was questionable and that is where I should have turned around. They asked for me to send W-2s with the ss# and income whited out! I can't say there is a "dream company". This place was selling all the equality, diversity, etc. but the bottom line is different. You can't necessarily read a book from the cover.
Don’t get sucked in to their bs. Please do not feel like you have to be the perfect employee for them. Keep looking for something better elsewhere.
So many people who are overqualified end up feeling like the have to listen to the demands of a manager and do well but, the goal should be to find something that deserves you. This place doesn’t and can end up sinking you to a lower level.
That is amazing that you have 3 masters! Are you in a situation where you can relocate? Are you seeking help with resume writing? Even if it’s a resume writing website, it can make a difference in how companies view you as a candidate.
I see what you are saying about dream companies. There’s really not a good way of knowing until you are on the inside on whether a company is ideal. I just got an offer from a company that’s closer to my ideals and am excited about that but, I’m always thinking long term goals now and how positions can help.
A lot of the lower level positions have liked me and talk me up as if I’m on a management path but, honestly do nothing for me personally and my educational background. It’s better to work on a plan to get out of this sort of position so you’ll be available to put what you’ve worked so hard for towards getting usable work experience.
I have multiple jobs right now which may be crazy but, it’s better than being stuck in one low level position that demand so much from me. Juggling part time positions isn’t for everyone but, for some it’s a way not to become stuck in 1 system,
One job I have, the pay isn’t great but, I absolutely love it because I have the opportunity to come ALIVE and put knowledge from a degree to use. It looks good on my resume in terms of my background and leadership. The clients are amazing too so that’s why I stay.
I’ve given you a lot to chew on and am hoping the best for you and your situation!
Is there upward mobility in the current job? If so, working hard and getting promoted ASAP might be your best strategy if you want to work for that company. With master's degrees, you should be able to at least get a side gig at a community college or career college teaching as an adjunct for extra money. You might want to contact career services at your college(s) as well to see if they have suggestions.
My manager, an RN, has said that I have no say as I am not licensed. I found out that one of the team leaders was showing favortism towards her ethnic peers. I found out that she had been fabricating stories about me being bad and telling the manager. Everytime I get called in I have to explain myself... until the last time when the customer set me straight. That would be an uphill battle.
The customer, a patient's wife, told me I would make a better nurse than the one that provided them service that shift. She said she had told the team leader, the one who was making up stories. Last time I saw that team leader she said, "I'm done with you!", and here I am looking towards positivity to move on! Thanks!
In that case, definitely move on! The sooner you're out of there, the better. Talk to career services at your most recent college if you need guidance as to where to apply. Get out of there ASAP and into a career where you're treated with respect.
