How do I land a remote role?
Hi all,
I am newly in the job hunt after making a decision to move back in with my parents who live across the country. I have a few months (until May) but I’d prefer a remote role over working in person, although I am open to both.
Ideally, I’d like a remote communications role or have a breakthrough to get into DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion).
For those who have gotten a remote job in the pandemic, how long did it take you to find a new role? What resources did you use? What websites did you use to find your role and applications?
Any help is appreciated!
Hi Katie! I got a remote role (current position) after I graduated from college. I got the role in March (offered in Feb), right before the pandemic.
I had no previous experience working remotely, but leveraged my study abroad experience which required me to attend class once a week and work independently the rest of the week, while also discussing my experience successfully taking online classes throughout college.
There are a lot of remote job websites out there but I did not have success with FlexJobs. That's not to say it's not valuable but it wasn't right for me.
I actually found my current job on https://www.mikesremotelist.com/.
My company has some remote roles. Check out our open positions here: https://grnh.se/0fbcd2222us and https://grnh.se/6bea459e2us.
Hope that helps!
I haven't gotten a remote job myself and . . .
Flexjobs.com is known for having only jobs that are flexible, including remote. It breaks down flex jobs by degree and type.
But don't depend on job sites. Network. Of course, there's LinkedIn. There also are industry/professional associations and other networking opportunities.
While you are looking to find a full-time job, consider freelancing. There are many sites for these UpWork, Fiverr, and LinkedIn's ProFinder among them. If you have the opportunity to meet with the employees, it will provide further networking opportunities. It could even lead to a job offer.
What type of roles are your looking for and do you have experience working from home?
I’m trying to be open to any and all comms roles (except sales, I’m
Not good at sales). I do have experience working from home!
The market is very very tight and competitive right now. I would focus on remote roles where you have experience. Depending on what you are looking for, it could take 1-2 or 5-6 months to find a job.
Yes, the job market is competitive and tight. It's taking longer to here a reply from potential employers (for those that have systems in place to provide that feedback) and on LinkedIn you can see there are over 100 applicants for remote jobs.
I appreciate this insight! Thank you for sharing
