Novice Digital Marketer
Hi, fairygodbosses! I am an accounting undergraduate. I failed again and again my remaining review accounting subjects, so I wasn't able to graduate. Let's say that I did give up because it was humiliating on my side to go back and enroll again and I didn't have the courage to tell my parents that I was such an outright expense and a long term liability on the family. I did try to study, forced myself to study but probably I lacked sufficient motivation and love for accounting. And so, after much moping, kicking myself (haha!) and self-reflection, I decided to try online courses and I discovered digital marketing. It piqued my interest because I feel like this will give me a chance to help people (I don't know, a gut feeling). Right now, I'm learning content marketing at Hubspot and Seo at Moz. After finishing these courses, do you think I have a chance at getting a job? Or do I need to find a mentor? Please help! I don't want to be a burden anymore.
I appreciate that you were able to acknowledge that accounting wasn't a good fit for you and pursue digital marketing. In terms of making the transition, I would suggest focusing on transferable skills (i.e. being comfortable with numbers).
What you need to find is a type of organization that you can best help with your newfound digital marketing skills and develop a portfolio to show that you can achieve those results. Then make a list of 100 organizations that can benefit from your help and connect with decision makers there on LinkedIn. Then, showcase your expertise by posting relevant content on LinkedIn and here on FGB (you need to have a profile that shows the impact you can create). Based on the expertise you show, you then need to approach hiring managers to invite them to dialog on their challenges and how you can help them. Download my free ebook at landdreamcorporatejobs.com for more details on how to go about this.
Thank you so much for your advice. I'm reading your ebook to help me in my job hunt.
