Positions on this site

This community is great! I have so enjoyed seeing articles and hearing from others who are also “finding their way” through challenging times. But the kind of jobs listed on this site are, well, really .... indicative of the mind numbing work I’ve tried to avoid my whole career ... similar to what one might find at an employment agency. I’m learning what a total let down those places are. I utilized one the other day for the first time ever and it was a complete bait and switch. What was advertised as a bank teller, was working at a predatory lending agency in a shady part of town. Took her 3/4 of the interview to tell me, “Well, this isn’t really a bank teller position, that’s just the way the company wanted to present it”. What are your favorite places to search when looking for jobs that require thinking AND people skills, something that seeks to make the world a better place (social good positions.)

Hello ConRez, Checking in on your search! Also if you haven't already, I’d love to invite you to our new professional profile (which is different from your current community profile) and quick apply feature –– which gives you closer access to recruiters who are actively looking to hire more women. These features helps you avoid the job application black hole by receiving updates on your application status in real-time and the option to message the company directly after submitting your profile (link below). Please let me know if you have any questions, best of luck with your search and please keep us posted! https://fairygodboss.com/users/job-profile?LAC=UGC&LAT=JSP

ConRez6179, here's a system that will get you what you want. Stop looking for listings and start making your own list of 100 companies you want to work for and can benefit with your expertise. Connect with school/college alumni, peers, supervisors, HR, the diversity office, female senior leaders of each company on LinkedIn. Thank those who agree to connect with you and ask them about their goals/key challenges so you can keep them in mind to add value to them in the future. Once you have those people in your network, post articles on LinkedIn to showcase your expertise. For those who are responsive and ask about you, mention you are looking to connect with companies who are looking for someone who can... (problem you solve/result you can deliver) and want to see if they can talk to you for 10 minutes to share more about their experience at their company. Prepare questions about the company, ask also if they offer bonuses for referring people to open positions at the company. Make sure you have a 1-2 sentence opening that shares the results you can deliver for an employer, not what skills you have (your LinkedIn profile and resume should focus on results as well). Ask them who else they think you should be talking to in their network. And end by asking how you can help them. People who are responsive will generally offer to connect you with open roles or other people (especially if you do a good job centering on them and their needs vs. your urgent job need). For templates on how to do this, and also how to send an impact email to hiring managers directly (bypassing the applicant tracking system), download my free ebook at www.landdreamcorporatejobs.com and request a free 30 min consultation after you apply the principles in my proven 7-step job search system so we can tailor my approach to your needs.

Building better communication strategies

Hi, thanks. I’m quite busy doing a lot of little side gigs so I can pay my bills and stay afloat while I find a good fit. (You can’t say I’m not resourceful!) The part of the country where I live has very limited results for my skill set. I’ve found some good remote work but did not qualify. The approach you suggest is certainly a comprehensive, wise, (and time consuming) way to finding something, but I’m afraid I’m running out of time. I don’t have a “list of companies” I want to work for. I would really rather not work for a company at all but since I have NO monetary resources to start my own “thang”, I must choose Plan B. As far as the great suggestions you offered, I’ve done quite a bit of that with some results. However, I lack solid work experience after a career transition and I’m being discriminated against for my age. I’m certain this combo is whats proving to be so challenging.

Barriers are tough. Sorry to hear that you have so many of them. One idea is to pursue nonprofits that specialize in helping people over 50 get work. I know you're in an area that does not have a lot of opportunities, so the goal with connecting with such an organization is to go on this tough journey with professionals who are paid to truly help you and may have access to work you had not thought about. Plan B of working can still be in an entrepreneurial environment. Remember also that a job search system cuts your search time by 33%. If you start doing the work on my system, you'll be amazed at how fast you can land. About half of my coachees landed their next dream job in 90 days of working the system. The key was... they followed the system. Daily.

Yes there are some great organizations like Encore, AARP ... I’ve applied to both and more to no avail. I’ve already been under/unemployed since September 5, 2019 so I don’t have 90 days left to devise a plan. I was self employed most of my career (low profit margin but greatly satisfying). Other work includes a ton of volunteering and low pay non-profit - challenging, but really feeds my spirit. My point is this, I’ve lived at or below the poverty level due to my choices, so no savings. Lots of folks would call that stupid but I’m not into having lots of “stuff”. I’m into performing gratifying work to serve people. That was perfectly fine until I lost the financial support of my partner of 17 years by moving 1400 miles to take care of mom. My nuclear family does have financial means but everyone is required to carry themselves. Kind of old school. I want to thank you for your contributions and ideas. I’m taking note!!

Oh, that’s ok, thank you. I’ve got plenty of leads and many sites that I check weekly. It just takes a lot more digging to try and find work that suits me. I was just saying that your listings don’t really fall in line with what I’m looking for ... I’m used to this. I’m not looking for a corporate gIg or tech or other typical stuff. I’m too entrepreneurial to be happy being a cog. Thanks again.

Hi ConRez6179, I'm sorry you had a bad experience with a misleading job description. From what I can tell, that wasn't something you found through FGB. Our our platform, we currently list over 150,000 jobs on our site that are taken directly from employers who are trying to hire more women. Can you tell us more about what you're specifically looking for? E.g. title and location? Have you tried setting a job alert? If you still can't find the job you're looking for here, let me know by connecting with me and sending me a message and I'll see what I can do.
