Hello!

I am currently in an administrative role at a company that is leading me nowhere, I am beginning to start to feel depressed and hopeless. I recently started taking online courses and am looking for new work. I am fearful of making a lateral move into another admin position which I just can't stand. Any advice would be welcomed!!

I am currently a Senior Executive Assistant, and I am curious if you like the work or if you are looking for an entirely different career. Either way, increasing your knowledge is great! I believe in continual learning, certifications, etc.

Hi Rhonda! I don't mind the work, however I think the issue is the environment I am in. It is a very small real estate company of all men, after 2.5 years I am realizing there is no opportunity for growth for me here. It is very much a boys club environment and i'm looking for something that fits my personality more!

I completely understand. Then, I would definitely start searching for other opportunities. If you enjoy the administrative professional field, I would suggest a mentor in your area who can help you in your search. I would also suggest that you make sure your resume is top-notch. I believe this is a good time to look for a job--especially if you want to work virtually. Do you mind to tell me what state you are in--assuming you're in the US.

Yes, I am in Illinois, Chicago to be specific. I am working on updating my resume, however I find it difficult to really paint a picture of who I am as a person. With my lack of Bachelors degree at the moment, I feel it holds me back. I have also had a variety of odd jobs, however I have a lot of pertinent experience!!

I understand exactly how you feel. I just took an assignment, and my entire mood shifted down. By taking the initiative taking classes is the first step. Then you may know to update the resume with updating your current skills and rewrite them with the knowledge of your recent studies.

I also think it is great to start your online courses and continue your education. It gives you a goal and helps to make you more confident. I agree that it won't benefit you to make a lateral move to another admin position, however you might learn some new things doing that. Unless you just do not like the company you work for you might finish your education and then look for another position when you decide what type of position you would like. Another step in the meantime is to have a conversation with your boss or HR. Ask about other opportunities within the company and what you might do to be considered. Let them know you are interested in growing to a new position. They might not know and think you are fully satisfied where you are. Good luck in your future!

Do you know what you would like to do instead? If not, I would start doing some research to see what type of role would be more fulfilling for you. I am in the process of doing this now. I wish you the best of luck!

Congratulations for taking a step forward in knowing you want a change! I am equally pumped to hear that you are enrolled in online courses to enhance your career. However, I am sorry to hear you've been having a rough time with feeling unfulfilled in your current role. The fact that you are taking the steps to change your situation is bold, brave and exciting!! I know something amazing is coming your way soon. Be encouraged and know that your next job opportunity is on the way. You are doing a great thing!! As you are in online classes, continue to join other digital communities so you can network toward the job of your dreams. The more you talk to people about what you're trying to do, it will help you remain motivated to keep going -- trust me, I've been in your shoes before. You DESERVE a fulfilling career that makes you feel good about the work you do each day! It won't be easy, but it is SO worth it. Good luck to you!!
