Overworked & Underpaid Recent Master’s Grad
Hello! I am reaching out because I urgently need to find a job with a decent salary since I just graduated with my master’s and will have student loan payments to make soon. I really regret studying what I did as there are limited options for international education degree holders in the US. I have spent a chunk of my experience either teaching or doing human resources work and have settled for pay way below what I should be making for years. I have eight years of varied experience that I take a lot of pride in and would love to share my resume. I Plan on attending law school in a year and have considered working at a firm to get experience firsthand as there are very few attorneys in my family. I really don’t want to continue working in education as I have unfortunately become disillusioned with the education system. However, I will take on a role in that sphere if I have to. Please let me know if anyone is interested in seeing my resume. Also, feel free to share any job hunting advice as I would really appreciate it :)
Will do, Megan! Thanks for sharing :)
Of course!

It's in Boulder, CO, so you'd have to be willing to relocate. I used to live and work in DC, though - and there are many instructional design, learning and development type jobs out there - many as consultants to government agencies. If you have or are eligible for a clearance, that ups your odds (and your salary) a lot!!
Oh! I don’t know if I’ll be able to relocate to Colorado long term but will keep the position in mind. Thanks for pointing that out. Also, how would one become eligible for government clearance? I have heard that about increased salary and odds but am unsure of where to start
Maybe look into instructional design/human performance improvement as a career - lots of jobs and you can utilize your existing education background. Great pay; none of the public school hassles...we are looking for someone to run our localization program at my company - that could be another good line of work for you as most companies are now global.

Thank you! That sounds like it would align well with my background and skill set. Will definitely apply to the position :)

Hi Tamara, I worked at World Learning many years ago. Maybe one of their open positions aligns with what you're looking for. If you find something you like, I may have some personal connections there still. Check it out and let me know if anything interests you, and I can reach out to my old boss to refer you. It was a good launching point for me when i completed my masters. You also get exposure to DoS employees, they are always good connections to have if you're interested in international work.

Thank you so much for sharing this! And thank you for the kind words. I remember applying to a couple of roles at World learning a while ago but not moving forward in the process. I think I may not have been qualified back then so having more experience and a reference would help so much this time around! I looked at the link you sent and found a Senior Program Associate position that I think aligns well with my experience: https://workforcenow.adp.com/mascsr/default/mdf/recruitment/recruitment.html?cid=094b78b8-9c3e-4fc8-b833-5fcb05de82e2&ccId=19000101_000001&type=MP&lang=en_US
Would you mind if I message you my resume and email address for the reference?
Yes, please do!
Hi Rosemary! I hope you are well. For some reason I can’t figure out how to directly message folks on FGB. Do you mind adding me on LinkedIn so I could message you there?
I'm looking for a new job as well. Currently underpaid and trying to get out of education field. We can brainstorm together if you would like to. Good luck!
Let’s do it! Good luck to you as well and thanks for the support
Also, have you considered to look in the higher education field? Usually working at higher Ed you can study for free at the university
Just looked at the generation.org website and this looks amazing! This is the first time I’ve heard of it. Thank you so much for sharing. I have tried to work at GW since 2017 when I began my Master’s and have submitted a total of over 200 applications. A lot of other students at the University feel this way- we rarely get offered full-time positions because the university has 100% tuition remission but tries to limit access to it. My boyfriend was able to secure it and is finally going to finish his bachelors in cyber security for free. However, he had been trying to work at GW full-time since 2015 but was only offered temporary positions that did not become permanent until early 2019
