Moving overseas in a few months

Hi all! I'm moving overseas in August with my husband and we're leaving our jobs in early May. I was wondering, how much notice would you advise giving? I like my boss and I don't want to leave her in the lurch because I do some more technical projects on my admin team, but I also don't want it to bite me in the bum! I work for a large company, and I don't think they'd turn me out immediately, especially as I'm not leaving for another job in our industry. I just don't know when to tell everyone! I'm bursting with excitement but I need to work as long as possible with the vacation time for 3 months.

Several factors to consider. How long is the hiring process at your company including background checks, etc.? And how long will it take you to train your replacement? Add those 2 figures together and add 2 weeks for interviewing potential replacements and that is how much time I would give. Also, I would start documenting everything to make it easier on your replacement. And you can use that when you give your notice.

Congratulations and I wish you and the hubby the best on your new endeavor. I’d definitely give two weeks as that’s the norm. In your situation maybe I’d give a month notice since you’re happy and not leaving for a new opportunity. In that month you can wrap up projects and help transition your workload if need be.

Oh my, Congratulations!!! If you like and trust your manager I would give 4 weeks notice and help with succession planning and wrapping up projects. Make sure you cc HR on your notice so you can make sure you get paid out for the time appropriately. It’s so hard to keep something so exciting under wraps, but try really hard not to gossip about yourself, start making succession plans for your manager.
