Job Ideas Requested

I am throwing this out there in case anyone can think of something I haven't. I am currently unemployed and am looking for a job at a nonprofit where I go home at the end of the day feeling like my work is helping make the world a better place. I have a background in college administration and teaching. What I am hoping to find is something where I can utilize my skills to enable and empower others to excel in their jobs. I especially enjoy mentoring younger people and people from other cultures. The volunteering I have been doing has really clarified for me that I love working on environmental issues, especially climate change and the other UN Sustainable Development Goals, and working with others who share this passion. I'm told that I work really well with young people, am a great listener, empathetic, and authentic. I am an experienced leader who loves the challenge of problem solving and I am tenacious in reaching my goals. I am not interested in working for a corporation or business unless it's in a role that involves transitioning the company to become more sustainable. Any ideas for me?

Your next steps most likely is to research organizations to determine which ones you would want to work for, in what capacity, and how you can make a uniquely valuable contribution. No, there does not have to be an announced opening at that organization. Just decide where you want to work.

Our jobseeking clients often make this kind of career pivot in a 2 step process. For example, first transitioning to your desired kind of organization, and then into the right role.

I'm in the same boat. Actually left higher ed last year to work for a non profit in workforce development but ended up with a toxic, abusive boss so I resigned right before covid. Sending you a link to connect.

Adding in to what Jennifer shared about job boards - I’ve used idealist.com to find non-profit opportunities. I am also in a similar position as you: background in higher ed and looking to switch to a different line of non-profit work. I’ve sent you a request to connect so that we can support each other in our searches.

Make a list of the non profits that interest you and reach out to people via LinkedIn or otherwise to build a network. Try to find people who have your dream job. Ask for informational interviews. Narrow down what jobs best fit your background and appeal most to you. Fill in any gaps in experience through online courses or volunteering. Start a ‘cover letter’ that outlines what you have to offer and why you want to do this work (to be adjusted for specific opportunities). Have fun with it. You’ve got this!

Hi! I have worked for non profits for many years and it can be very rewarding. There are many non-profit job boards. This is one I have used in the past. https://nationalnonprofits.org/nonprofit-jobs/search I also suggest that you find several non-profits that align with your interests (climate change; sustainable development) and check the job listings on their website. Best wishes-Jennifer
