Hello.
I need some help with an upcoming 2nd interview. This is for a job I really want but besides that, the role is something I've been eyeing for a while. I am highly qualified and can give an example of everything they ask for in the job description. However I have a voice in my head telling me the job is above my level, out of reach and basically talking myself out of ever getting this job. How can I shut out this voice that says I am not good enough for this job when I know the other rational side of me knows I CAN do this role.
Congratulations!! very exciting ... When I find myself in similar situations, I find it helpful to work through this exercise. On a piece of paper or post-it's write down the aspects of the job you are very confident with (you have got this part!). Then write down the aspects you feel may be over your head (some aspects are your perceptions and other aspects have been clearly outlined). When you have this completed, work through the items you feel are over your head and identify how you would handle them and write out the process / solutions. This may include additional training (read a book, online course), reaching out to your network to gain insights from someone that actually does this job (they will give you the down and dirty of the specific items in question), and / or how you would leverage the broader team within the organization to meet the needs of the specific action.
A new job / role is an opportunity to stretch. Everyone that takes on a "stretch" is in a position to learn and grow. You will be amazing!
Congrats! One thing u could do to cancel the voices would be to tell yourself about the positive things. One voice says u r beneath that position? U say I can do it because I have the skillset
Congratulations on your second interview!! That definitely means they’re super interested in you! I hope this anecdote helps, but after a year+ of searching and 8 interviews with this company I just landed a job that I would describe similarly, it’s exactly what I’ve had my eye on and what I’ve been pursuing. And even though I already got the offer, I keep thinking “what if I can’t live up to their expectations? What if I don’t end up being a good fit?? What if they fire me!”
These thoughts are super common when you’re close to what you want and deserve and have earned! Try to let them pass through your head without any concern, and then consciously spend some time visualizing how great you’re going to feel when they offer you the job.
Be your genuine (and well prepared) self in your interview and everything will be great! You got this!!!
It's always a good idea to reach for the next position. Sometimes we're not ready when the opportunity arises. But more often we just don't think we're ready. They see in you what you bring to the table and your potential. Go for it. You got this and you'll be awesome.
I see what you mean. Sometimes I have the same feeling, I struggle constantly against Imposter Syndrome. But what I always say to myself is that if they called you for a second interview they like you and think you can totally manage the role. So good luck!
I completly understand. Why dont you try to combat these ideas by writing down your accomplishments and since you know you are qualified and can do the job.this way its reinforcement for you as well as help you prepare for your 2nd interview. Good luck!
Congrats on the second interview. Honestly, if they invited you back for a second interview, they believe you are capable. No company would waste the time on a second interview if they have any reason to believe you would not be a good fit. You've got this!
I read this article yesterday from the Cleveland Clinic about this. I often feel this in jobs that I'm applying for. Some are a little out of my range and I feel its fair to feel this way a bit. While another asks for bare minimum requirements/skills - I blow them out of the water and I just got way too into my head and feel overly anxious for no reason
Here's the article https://health.clevelandclinic.org/a-psychologist-explains-how-to-deal-with-imposter-syndrome/
Thanks for sharing that article!
Maybe you are a victim of the Imposter Syndrome? Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments. Many question whether they're deserving of accolades.
Keep telling yourself that you can do this job. Think that it’s a stepping stone to the next level. Look through the job description and think more about all of the things that you can do! You’ll do great!!
