Hello Everyone
My question is to anyone currently working in the healthcare industry or a medical coder
What advice would share with a new medical coder
What advice would you share about working the healthcare industry
Hi Tasha. I just came across your post now, so I apologize for the delay. I’ve worked in healthcare for about 17 years, both as a clinician and an administrator, and the biggest piece of advice I have (other than the one left anonymously below, which is excellent, IMO), is to always, ALWAYS be willing to cross train, job shadow, take advantage of short term details in other departments, etc. Health care is a field that is so incredibly diverse, and despite what many may think on the surface, is rich with jobs that do not require specific medical or allied health professional degrees. Medical coding is a great example of that. Once into the Health Information field, you can essentially move anywhere on the administrative side of health care, assuming you are open to new experiences and continuing education/learning. Good luck to you!
Thank you
I am a CPC now for 5 years. I would say to look to get on with a hospital. They are more willing to train from the start. Sometimes even pay for your license and books.
Thank you
