How long did it take between your first and second interview?
Hello everyone! I had two phone interviews Friday that I think went pretty well. I am definitley more on the anxious side (don't worry in therapy) so the inbetween is killing me! I know that it has only been like one business day since the interviews but was looking to see average time line that people experience in the meantime.
I think what is really getting to me is that I am so excited about the potential of of one of the jobs.
Do the thank you note thing and then continue to look for jobs. There are many quality candidates out there. An initial interview means you're resume excited HR. It doesn't mean the hiring manager will be excited. I had a great interview with HR, my potential boss, the whole team and 9 months later the position is still open.
Did you follow up with a quick note/email thanking them for their time, reiterating your interest, would love to speak again, blah blah blah?
I did not do that! I didn't realize that was common practice. That is a good idea!
TU notes might not be commonplace, but they certainly will make you stand out. Have an outstanding future. Cheers to you.
Thank you! I did go ahead and send a note. And drum roll - just heard back and have the second interview tomorrow! Fingers crossed!
Totally agree on the TKU note. I know there’s lots of debate about the necessity of a follow up note but I’ve always embraced this as an opportunity to pick a nugget (read: pain point) from the interview to demonstrate how I’d solve a problem.
For instance, the job I’m in now. A pain point from one of the interviews was establishing a process around something. My TKU included the regular thanks for your time, etc., but also steps I would take to quickly address this issue. I felt like it demonstrated that I was listening during the interview and was interested in being a contributing member of the team.
I did this through five rounds of interviews and I got the job!
Best of luck in your next steps!
Thank you ma'am! I think the good thing about this one is that there was no pain point. She talked about their concerns/I addressed them and she said she thought I might be a perfect fit. The waiting is just killing me. I will send a thank you note though. Do you think it is bad that I am sending it later?
Send it late, totally ok! And consider commenting on things like their mission statement, their ESG efforts, their charitable activity…whatever really spoke to you about the organization.
If you didn't ask at the conclusion of your interview, you could follow up, reiterate your interest and thanks and ask if they can share their decision timeline.
Don't take it personally if it takes a bit. In our company, interviews/hiring is always on top of the rest of the daily work, so it often takes HR hounding our managers to move processes along. It has nothing to do with candidates, just workload and priorities, and, calendars.
1 to 2 weeks to get on everyone's calendars.
Be patient as I am seeing people getting notification of next step in a couple days to a couple of months. Some are ghosted and never get word either way. There is no industry standard unfortunately. Keep looking until you hear back from one of them.
