Hi all!
My name is Jess, I am currently looking to jump into Project Management in any field, although my background is Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics/ Beauty. I have my BS in Chemistry. In my 2 years as a chemist, I learned I do the same tasks and have the same responsibility as a project manager, I am just also on the bench making the product too! I have a product I managed from formulation to its launch (FRECK Beauty FaceHack bronzer, it's in Sephora!) I just don't know how to translate any of this as a portfolio or my skills because it was all science based. Any help or guidance would be appreciated!
Have you considered the medical field? Places like City of Hope (cancer research) has locations all over So California as well as Atlanta, Chicago and Phoenix.
My initial intent was to enter the medical field, but they want Masters and PhD's and I do not want to go for my PhD at the moment. They also do not pay well - lastly I am based in NY and relocation assistance would be needed.
Look at project management jobs and see what the requirements are and match your skills to that. Leave the science part out and stick to numbers and deliverables. For example, you could say:
"Chemist (or whatever title you have), Freck Beauty
*Developed FaceHack Bronzer
*Oversaw entire life cycle of product from inception through delivery (break this down into bullet points if you want to show the steps you took and what you managed-product development, project length, marketing, project launch, product placement, etc.)
*Managed product development budget of $XX,000 (break this down as needed)
*Product results (launched product in 300 Sephora stores nationwide, expected sales of $XX,XXX in 2023 and XX% growth expected in 2024)
*Any awards/praise received at your company (best new product, quickest launch, on time and under budget) and/or in the media related to this project
Having solid figures and showing your skills is highly transferrable and easier than you think. If you see a job you are interested in, read the job description carefully and tailor your resume to it. Even if you don't have the amount of experience listed or have managed only a small budget project, apply for anything that appeals to you. This product is a great career builder and can open a lot of doors for you. Good luck!
That definitely helps. I think the generic resume layout is so ingrained into my brain I did not think to include figures and numbers! Thank you
