Software Engineer to UX Designer
Hello! Looking for some help with my career! I have been a Software Engineer for a little over 5 years now and I am actively trying to transition to a design position. I'm currently pursuing my MS in UX at ASU as a part time online student while I work full time. Would love to get any pointers on how to find opportunities in the design field. Looking to be mentored. I have had a bit of a rough time in my career growth and I feel like making this switch will help me find my motivation again along with exercising my creativity.
In no particular order, here are some suggestions for you:
1- Look for software engineering roles at companies where UX is a core focus—think Adobe, Figma, Bubble.io, Webflow, etc.
Working as a dev in a UX-driven environment will give you exposure to design teams, processes, and best practices.
2- Use your current skill set to get your foot in the door.
If you land a software-related job at a company with a strong UX culture, you’ll naturally build connections with the design team. This can open up opportunities for an internal transition while growing your UX network.
3- Always be designing (ABD).
Keep building your portfolio, but be strategic about the projects you take on. Real-world experience is great, but if you can, focus on projects that give you outsized impact. One option: Many startups are open to UX help in exchange for a small fee or equity. I’m not saying work for free—just that you can be intentional about picking projects that build your portfolio, sharpen your skills, and expand your design network on your terms.
Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn! While I’m not a UX designer myself, I lead product in early-phase startups, have hired many UX designers, and have strong connections in the startup and product world. Happy to help however I can.
