How should I share good career news during this time?
I've just been offered a new position (!) and while I've shared the news with my boyfriend, family, and closest friends, I'm wondering how I should share the news beyond my closest circle. So many people have been laid off and are looking for work--just like I was a week ago!--and I don't want to be insensitive. Should I hold off? What's the best way to go about this?
Congratulations! That is quite an accomplishment in this competitive landscape! I really appreciate your empathy and thoughtfulness. I recommend a "soft rollout." Proceed with telling your inner circle. After that, limit your updates to your profile on LinkedIn and FGB and other professional networking sites, for now. Best of luck in your new role!!
Thank you, Danielle! Love this advice.
First of all... CONGRATULATIONS!
Second, Bless you for having a caring spirit regarding the situation.
Though not on the front lines, my job is tied to the Hardware Retail channel. Therefore, I've been blessed to continue working [from home] during this time. I have indeed been berated by people because I am still employed. It frustrates me terribly.
I believe you have every right to celebrate - openly - that you found a job.
Will someone else who's unemployed possibly get jealous? Sure.
HOWEVER...
It's also quite possible that someone else who's unemployed will be inspired by your news and continue his/her own search for a job.
Here's a thought... When you do announce it on whatever platform... Perhaps consider explaining how you went about finding the job? Did you go through a recruiter? Did you use a site like Indeed.com? Are there particular skills you possess that you feel or know got you the job? This may help others who are searching.
All the best...
Thank you! This is a great perspective - I didn't even think that sharing could possibly help others. What a good idea!
Agree with the above comment. I would definitely not share it on twitter or on IG, but I think sharing it on LinkedIn would be a great idea. Congratulations on your new position! I hope you find success in your new role.
LinkedIn was the platform I was debating - I'm glad my instincts were right about steering clear of Twitter and IG. Thank you!!
Congratulations on the new role! How exciting.
This leads me to ask, who else did you feel like you need to announce it to since it seems like you've told most of the people close to you?
If this were me, I would definitely share this on a professional site like LinkedIn, Fairygodboss, etc. However, I likely wouldn't announce it elsewhere on social like FB or Instagram. I know that good new can uplift people but also with so many people being out of a job and struggling, they may view it differently. If they are friends or acquaintances, they will find out in due time anyway. Hope this helps!
Thank you! I was definitely thinking about LinkedIn more than personal social media sites. I want to update my professional network, but some friends and acquaintances are also connected with me there, so that's why I'm debating sharing. This is a really helpful perspective, thank you!
Congratulations! That's so exciting! I know it's tricky because so many people have recently lost their jobs but it's always good to hear good news. And in fact, I'm sure your new will give hope to others who are searching! Curious, how'd you land your latest job during this time?
Congratulations
Thank you!
Thank you! What a good perspective. I know some other users have mentioned this, but networking during this time was extremely helpful to finding work. I reached out to my contacts to check in, and offered support and referred people when I could.
