Hi everyone!
Just joined the job seeker group, and wanted to reach out: I recently transitioned from working in Physical Therapy pre-pandemic, to Software Engineering after completing a Bootcamp. I'm struggling with getting interviews and was hoping someone in here completed a successful transition into SWE from a non-traditional background and may have some advice/insights. I'm getting frustrated with the auto-rejection, almost to the point of subscribing to one of the "pay a portion of your first year salary" services (which I swore I would never do).
if you haven't already, you may want to apply for development positions in PT-related companies and startups. That's how I transitioned from laboratory science to a technical product job.
you may not have experience in Development but you have loads of healthcare experience that can be a huge bonus to hiring companies.
builtin.com is a great place to get educated on startups.
Hi Tina and welcome to the FGB family.
I'm sorry, I don't have any experience directly related to your field of interest. But I do feel that networking is beneficial. Are there any SWEs you know that could point you in the right direction?
All the best,
If I were you, I would actively network and find personal contacts (primary and secondary contacts) to get referrals.
As a career-changer, you may need to think differently about the entry-level job you get. Accenture has something called an Apprenticeship https://www.accenture.com/us-en/about/company/apprenticeships. In the profiles on the page, I've personally worked with Carlos out of the Detroit office - he also changed jobs and went through a Bootcamp. I'm sure other companies have something similar, that they may call something different. Hope that helps!
