Getting attached to jobs (I don't yet have)
Just today, I found the perfect job. I matched the criteria exactly (it was like they knew what I loved to do) and it was remote.
Realistically, I also know it is the perfect job for 50 other people and I might not even get an interview. In fact, I had to break up with my last 'perfect' job when it was pretty clear it was a no-go.
But I just can't help it.
What do you do to avoid fantasying about that 'perfect' job after applying?
What tips can you give me to help me just apply and let it go?
Good morning.
Remember, nothing is perfect, Job offers happen for a reason. Fantasizing about anything gets us nowhere. Don't look back. Keep looking forward. Tell yourself how wonderful you are.
Leave the fantasy to Walt Disney,
Best wishes,
Leslie
Hi there.
My take on this is that idealizing something like a job, a romantic relationship, or any major situation in life really, can be beneficial, as long as you know what your part in creating that ideal outcome really is. Love this job? Prep like you’ve never prepped before for any other interview. Love this job? Take the time to customize your resume to show exactly how much value you could bring to the organization. Love this job? Do your homework and know the organization’s vision and mission statements. Being connected to something can be a great motivator. I wish all the luck in the world!
Wow! I thought I was the only one who did this! You really set yourself up for disappointment. I’ve really had to put in to practice the “If it’s meant to be” mentality. It exhausting.
Good luck!
Hi Anonymous
I'm Gayatri Devi from Andhra Pradesh searching for a job at the age of 37. Having no previous experience wanted to start my career to be financially independent. As a woman, I hope all the women who see my msg would help in any other way. My abilities are I'm a good learner, having good communication skills. I believe Experienced candidates start their career from learning. I request u to give me a chance to learn and do the work and give me a chance to prove myself. Your Help means a lot to me.
The best ways not to fantasize about the “perfect” new job are:
-Recognize that very few jobs are perfect.
-Apply to as many jobs as possible, so that you don’t get overly attached to a particular opportunity.
-Recognize that job hunting is fundamentally unpredictable— do your best, but you can’t control what an employer will decide. In other words, it’s more like winning the lottery than any of us might wish, so don’t get attached. You wouldn’t get so attached to a Lotto ticket, right?
I think that you’ve already developed an excellent insight to keep in mind: the job is perfect for 50 (or more) applicants, so no point in getting attached.
It's human to imagine and plan. Maybe it's good, you can dialogue and suppose how you would do the job. Maybe this helps for interviews. Good luck!
