Changing careers

Hello! I decided last August that I no longer want to work in Marketing. I want to work in HR. I obtained my aPHR in October and have a mentor to help me navigate my new career goals. I revamped my resume and obtained a volunteer opportunity to gain experience, and I've been growing my network. I've had some interviews but no job offers, and countless applications. The interviews I do get are too junior and the salary expectations are low. I'm being passed on by roles I believe I would be perfect for. I'm feeling defeated and kind of lost at this point. I'm wondering if I should just give up on a career change and go back to Marketing.

Hey Morgan! When it comes to making career transitions like this, networking can be really beneficial. It gives you the opportunity to create a deeper relationship with someone who maybe hiring for that HR role other than just trying to prove yourself in an interview. You could consider starting with finding people who are already working in HR roles that you'd be interested in (LinkedIn is great for that!) or companies that you'd want to work at and then conducting informational interviews, you can start creating that relationship but also get their advice and thoughts on how to best break into the industry. Obviously, you'll get the opportunity to talk about your situation too and you can explain where you are and why you're looking to make the move. They can then act as a potential advocate for you in the hiring process later down the road. Don't be afraid to connect with your current network too and ask if they have any referrals for people you could talk with that maybe able to help also! Don't give up, you got this :)

Thank you Aly! That was great advice! I appreciate that, I have been conducting some informational interviews, but i can do way more. Yes, it would help if I didn't have to prove myself so much. I needed to hear this, and I appreciate your kind words. I needed this pick me up. ;)

Hi Morgan. I'm so sorry for your frustration. Don't give up on your dream. Are you working right now? If not, could you take a temporary position in Marketing until you find your full-time HR? You may have seen it, but Indeed.com has a section dedicated to those who've just graduated with a new career. Do you plan to pursue a PHR at some point? From what I know, an aPHR is the stepping stone for entry-level HR professionals to get the proverbial "foot in the door". Would you consider starting at a lower level if you knew eventually you'd move into a full HR position?

I am currently working at the moment which is a plus. I can check that section out on Indeed. Also, yes I obtained my aPHR last year in October. I would, I have applied to HR Coordinator positions, but have gotten a mix of overqualified and not qualified enough.
