Question: Has anyone hired a Resume Writer and found it helpful?
Please let me know if y'all have any recommendations, Thank you!
Be cautious with resume writers- make sure they are asking you a lot of clarifying questions about your experiences and that they target the resume towards what you want to do rather than what you've done.
Some do an excellent job, others follow their own idea of a template and can be very fluffy. As a career counselor and coach, I've had the unfortunate task of occasionally sharing with someone that there is no "meat" in their very prettily formatted resume- just lots of jargon- and they then shared that they'd paid hundreds of dollars for it. They came to me because the "professionally" written resume was failing to get them interviews.
There are certainly good resume writers out there- ask for samples, but if they all look the same, consider it a red flag.
And I agree with the commenter to find someone who can advise you on HOW to write an effective resume, can help with this first one, and then you'll be able to update it and revise it on your own. Resumes are creative non-fiction, not rocket science, and most folks can learn to them on their own.
Hi. I have used two professional resume writing services. One, Top Resume, does a good job of the written piece but for a very hefty price. I believe they are utilizing Affirm, so one can make monthly payments towards covering their services. The other Resume service I used was Leet Resumes. They did a phenomenal job with reducing the wordiness from my resume and helped to focus on my value-added contributions within my role. It was also very economical. However, none of them can do very much for resume development without the candidate appropriately identifying their accomplishments and overall value added contributions within their role. Good luck and I wish you the best!
Thank you!

I hired one right out of undergrad (before I started working in Career Services and had no idea what I was doing). Here is what I learned....don't hire someone who just wants to write the resume for you. Now this seems obvious to me now but at 22 it did not.
I would encourage you to find someone who is more willing to teach you about resume writing and formatting rather than writing it for you. Since you should be tailoring each resume to the job description having someone write it for you doesn't help you in the long run.
Those that write it for you also tend to give you job description like bullet points instead of achievement based bullet points. They tend to be generic because they assume you will tailor it to each job description and they didn't work your position.
I think there are many Career Coaches/Resume coaches out there that have this type of style it just takes time to find one. Sorry I couldn't give you a recommendation, but I wanted to lend some advice.
Thank you!
I hired a resume writer several years ago. It was not helpful. The person was not knowledgeable. The resume had more fluff than substance. I was disappointed and decided to rewrite my resume on my own. The result was a better resume because I knew my field and researched the job I wanted. I also found sample resumes for the particular job I wanted and used those as a road map.
Thank you!
