About to take a pretty big career leap
First of all, I got a job by creating a professional profile and applying on Fairygodboss -- and couldn’t be more excited about this new opportunity. Here's the professional profile link for new FGB'ers!

I’m going from a manager to a director-level role and am looking for guidance! For those are managed by directors, what are the key successful management takeaways you’ve learned from them? I want to bring my best self and cannot wait to leap into this somewhat scary yet exciting new opportunity. Thanks for the advice in advance!
Congratulations!!!! Awesome work.
Remember you are hired because you are ready for this! You know what to do, trust yourself.
Having managed directors, especially new ones, one of the biggest changes when they move from being "managers" to "directors" is that they are no longer managing process, they are now managing people who manage process and they need to trust their team, support their team, and develop their own system of making sure everything is getting accomplished and communicated.
Where I've seen new Directors flounder is communicating up. You're now the conduit for communicating to leadership what the needs of your team are and how those needs align to the success and priorities of the company.
I highly recommend the Stanley McCrystal book's "My Share of the Task" and "Team of Teams." Though they are military related, they do a great job of demonstrating how to organize teams in massive organizations in a way that can be applied anywhere.
You may also want to take a few EdX classes on Servant Leadership and Crucial Conversations.
You will grow, and it will be challenging, but it is so rewarding!
Congratulations and best of luck!
