Good afternoon/evening all.

I am Nicole Christensen and am just joining this group as I am currently looking for a new position. I come from an educational background with a BA in Language Arts Secondary Ed., and MA in Literacy/Reading, and an ABD EdD in Curriculum and Instruction. However, I am finding that now that I have taught for 21 years, I get more excited about planning strategy, thinking analytically, and helping to drive change than I do for a new school year. I am currently working on a certificate through Google in Project Management. Any support, networking, or ideas that are out there for helping a former educator try something new, please send it my way. Connect and message me if you would like a copy of my resume/CV or linked in link.

You just described advocacy to a T. Have you considered looking for work at the policy-making level in the field of education? Or perhaps linking up with groups that advocate for change for resources for their constituents in the field at large?

Jennifer, I have not navigated that area before. I am not sure where I might go to find something like that. Would you have tips on where to start? Thanks for the assistance! Nicole

I think you have to first consider which constituents you find yourself most geared towards advocating for change for. For example, if you really feel passionate about issues that impact teachers or the profession at large I am sure there are many different opportunities within the teachers unions in your area. You could test the waters by getting involved in the contract negotiation team or by handling grievances. Likewise, if you feel strongly about issues that impact students and their families I'm sure there are a variety of different grassroots organizations by issue type (e.g., children with special needs; children in underserved communities, etc.) that you could link up with. I'm sorry I don't have much more specific suggestions, but I hope these give you a starting point!
