Anyone else laid off due to COVID-19?

Hi All, I am seeking work in the HR field. I have not been working since the end of March. First I was furloughed and then I was laid off. My position was one of many laid off across the country. I felt saying laid off due to COVID was acceptable. However during a webinar about recruiting someone made a discouraging comment. “How do we know the applicant isn’t using that as an excuse? Maybe they were laid off due to poor performance.” I was thinking I was having trouble finding a job because so many others are also searching for work. Now I’m wondering if there is more to it. Sigh!!

@Ciara, love your comment, "Tell the truth!" When candidates try to cover up what happened in their last job, it gets in the way of them being real and authentic. Being real ALWAYS wins. @Debbie Be cautious of relying too heavily on your resume. I just posted a job for a client for HR and we received 800+ resumes in the first couple days! Think about what you would look for if you had to choose one candidate out of 800. Times have changed in just the past 30 days!!

Thank you. I used the Leadership Cafe. A series of videos that coach you on how to write a ATS friendly resume. I may consider using another service if I don’t get any results soon. Who did you use?

Hi Debbie! First, I want to thank you for sharing and allowing us to give you an insight into the madness we all are experiencing. Most of us were laid off in March as well, so you are not alone. I spoke to several recruiters and career guidance professionals, and they all agree with one thing, tell the truth. It doesn’t matter the reason, the hiring manager will conduct a reference/background check to verify your resume. Therefore, I wouldn’t stress about telling the truth. Third, the job market is super tough right now. I hired an experienced and highly recommended resume/cv letter writer via LinkedIn and she is phenomenal. Not having an ATS friendly resume with a career summary will hinder you in so many ways. Please let me know if that maybe the other issue. I will be happy to help and refer you. Have a great weekend! Hope this helps!
