Hello Everyone, I am new to this group, so thanks for having me!
I could use your assistance, as I realize that as I evolve over the years, my summary to my resume has not, and I feel that it does not represent me. Have any of you, found that and what did you do about it? Are there any great recommendations on whether to change it or keep it the same? I need something to stand out and be recognized in the ATS in what seems to be a very competitive job market? Thank you! :)
What are your top skills? How do you like to work? How do you create value? Where are you excited to contribute? This is what you need in a summary if you have one.
Thank you, Elissa! I love those questions and will use them to guide me.
Hello. Yes, I’ve experienced that as well! I have a lot of experience and I don’t omit it from my resume even though some recruiters recommend that it is too long. In that situation, it is cropped according to job description. My field is business and administrative, so I can do a lot in many different industries. It doesn’t stop me from getting interviews or jobs!
I found inspiration looking at LinkedIn summaries on the profiles of successful women in my industry. I think today’s summary is really more a personal brand statement.
Your overall resume should always be evolving. I have multiple versions that focus on different areas, and I update/refresh every year even if the changes are subtle. You can look up ATS-friendly resumes. There’s lots of information out there. I’m a creative ( marketing, copywriter) so I also have a “fancy resume,” a “simple” ATS-friendly resume, and text-only resume. Plus I customize my resume for each application. I understand how you feel. I lost my job last June due to COVID. It was a very toxic and dysfunctional environment so it was a relief in some ways. I finally landed a great job in February. Keep chugging on and tap into your network and former colleagues to see if they have openings. Ask them if they have a recruitment bonus program so they get paid if they recommend you for a job. Good luck!
Thank you, Laurie! I appreciate your input and wishes! I will look out for ATS-friendly resumes examples. Again, thank you for your advice, and congratulations on your new position! Jill
