What are the job prospects like for a woman over fifty who is trying to change careers and hasn’t worked for a long while?
I recently listened to Comeback Careers by Mika Brzezinski about this exact plan. I found it motivating and practical. Please check it out.
Woman our age have what some lack 'work ethics' and 'experience'. We shine where others do not. Remember age is just another number, regardless of what companies may think. There are opportunities out there. Good luck!
I’m 44 and age discrimination is real, I had a recruiter ask me what year I graduated high school, when I told him, his response was “oh” and he quickly ended the call. We just have to put ourselves out there and the right company will give you an opportunity. The companies that wouldn’t hire an older employee are not companies you’d want to work for anyway. You got this, keep going after what you want and an opportunity will come.
You should have pointed out to the recruiter that asking that question is illegal and should be removed from their screening questions. I won't answer any question that shows my age. It's hard to get interviews as an older worker, but it can happen. Good luck to anyone job hunting right now.
Again FGB, being over 50 is not a death sentence! No one is putting us out to pasture except ourselves. Let’s stop this victim mentality before the job search has even commenced.
The OP has mentioned nothing about her search. We have no info on her education, experience, industry shifts or current search efforts. How on earth can this board already condemn her to discrimination, judgement and rejection?
What do you do?
I’ve worked as a Food Microbiologist, a Minister, and I’m currently a substitute teacher. I also homeschooled, and worked as a QA Technician.
I’m trying to get into the social impact field.
I'm sorry, I don't know what "the social impact field" is. Can you be more specific?
Not easy being over 50 , your resume gets you the interview but when they see you interviewer tells you your mature time to tell him off discreet bad way of telling you over 50. No proof for file a discrimination
