Job search in a new country
Hi all,
Soon I’ll have to join the army of job-seekers due to Covid-19. I’ve worked in HR for 5 years but moved to the US only in November 2019 and started working in February 2020.
They say ‘use all the connections’ because a lot of jobs are not posted online – but the question is what to do if I'm not from here, thus don’t have many connections and worked only 1 month in the office before we were sent home to work remotely?
I’m passionate about HR in general and L&D/Talent Development in particular. I have experience in various industries and I can do a lot of great projects. Moreover, I've been to the US a lot of times so I don't have a culture shock, there is no huge cultural gap between me and local people and I speak English almost like native speakers. Could you please advise on what’s the best job search strategy in my case?
I would appreciate any thoughts and feedback, thank you!
Hello Ksenia! I am in the States and work in the Learning & Development space in Florida. Feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn as well. (Kimberley Ferretti)
Hi Ksenia, when I moved countries (India to Hong Kong), I looked up every possible professional association and attended at least one event. I also volunteered at a few different places. I gradually found a couple of groups where I fit in, and have a broad network now. I also found Meetup quite helpful.
That sounds like a great action plan! I had actually tried a couple of meetups before Covid19 began. I wish I could do it now - but I guess I'll try to join professional associations online while offline events are banned. Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
With Covid & virtual events, many of the events are free or low-cost. Even some major conferences are free this year. Good luck!
Hi, Ksenia! I'm happy to connect with you on LinkedIn! Find me at linkedin.com/in/chre
I would lean on the people you can meet here on Fairygodboss. I am not looking for work but I offered to make connections for some FGB members who were looking for work.
If you want to connect with me on LinkedIn, I would be happy to connect you with anyone in my network you want to be introduced too.
FYI -- I'm came to the US in the early 2000s (from Canada, so most people would think there was no cultural difference {there is some} and i didn't struggle with learning a new language) yet after leaving the company that sponsored by VISA, I found myself struggling to expand my network to the same size as my peers who had gone to college and had their first few jobs in the US.
Thank you so much for sharing your story and giving practical advice! I'll definitely find you on LinkedIn.
I wish I discovered Fairygodboss earlier. But better late than never )
