Feeling frustrated
Hi Everyone! I just joined tonight after having a huge setback yesterday. I am trying to transition into the forensics and Coroner/medical examiner investigator industry but with not a lot of direct experience, I am always 2nd, 3rd, or 4th. Yesterday, I was informed that the interview I had last week with a Coroner's Office, "went extremely well and I should be proud of my accomplishments, but I do not have the direct experience as the other candidates." I realize this, but without an opportunity, I cannot get experience.
I know this industry is far-fetched, at least it feels like it, so I am broadening my interests: Forensics/Death Investigations, Internal/Employee Relations Investigations and Criminal Investigations. I am also wanting to relocate, so I am pretty much willing to move anywhere for the right opportunity. I would love to connect or if any of you have connections that could assist me, I would really love that!
Everyone who is getting the type of job you are seeking started out with as little or less experience than you have. Therefore, do a little networking. Develop relationships with some of these people. Then, ask if they are willing to have informational interviews with you, so you can learn what they did to get the experience in order to get that first job.
Hi Ashley, Getting your foot in the door is always the hardest part. Have you reached out to any other medical examiners for advice? I happen to follow Nicole Angemi, MS, PA aka mrs_angemi (httpss://instagram.com/mrs_angemi?igshid=1prillhmwycwv) on Instagram and she seems very open and responsive to inquiries. She might be someone to ask.
Also you are brave woman. I started my career wanting to do forensic photography, and while I had the stomach for it, I didn't have the mental metal. Changed career paths after my first case.
Good luck to you!
Thank you both! I appreciate the ideas and the support. I am definitely working on my networking skills and will reach out to customers. Thanks again!
Here's possibly a crazy idea... Have you considered looking at networking with the 'customers' of the job you want. (How about listing out every connection between the role you want and who they work with? For example - Coroner works with PDs, and many other organizations. How about trying to meet folks in those customer organizations? Tell them you'd like to talk to them about what makes a great connection/relationship between a Coroner and their organization. Tell them you're job hunting, ask for a contact, and find new contacts from whomever you talk to next. Networking via phone and other sites during this time of distancing is a great way to keep the goal in action!
Ashley, I am so sorry to hear your are feeling a bit frustrated. I just want to encourage you and remind you that very often, what is perceived as a setback is really just a setup for a stronger comeback. I recently had a very similar experience, and like you, looked to see how I could fill the "gap," and in doing so, believe I've placed myself in a stronger position. If possible, you may want to consider taking some classes to broaden your educational background in this space and/or determine if there are any opportunities to volunteer to gain the direct experience referenced. I truly believe that you were meant to prosper, so if you did not receive this opportunity, its only because there is another, better position for you in the future. Happy to be your source of encouragement whenever you need.
