"Be yourself"
I need help understanding when someone tells me to, "be yourself (myself)" for an upcoming interview. Who else would I be?
Have I shown imposter behavior I don't recognize?
Have I pretended before?
Should I (not) be showing the panel all of me?
What do you actually mean?
There is nothing comforting about an interview. I prepare and second guess myself every time. How do I express myself and get my true (professional) personality across? Are we given enough time to have that mutual relationship with the interviewer? I promise I won't swear (even though that is being myself.) or invite you for a happy hour...
Can someone in the FGB universe explain what people mean when they say this and how to respond respectfully?
Beth, I feel the same way! Of course I'm going to be myself, who else would I be! Since I don't have a direct answer for you, I will give you some advice that was given to me and that I have found valuable during my job hunt. Remember, that you are interviewing the company just as much as they are interviewing you. I tend to be a nervous wreck when interviewing but during the interview itself (and before while preparing) I remind myself that I am a phenomenal employee, a super fun person and that I need to make sure this employer deserves me! Good luck to you and I hope this helps.
