Follow-up resume
I applied for a program manager job at a university. It had a closing date of 9/23. I haven’t heard anything yet and I know academia moves slowly. Is it too late for me to drop off a paper version of my resume and cover letter? Would it be against protocol to do that?
Hi Kelly, It's never too late. Plus you don't know what's happening on the inside. Why not apply? What do you have to lose? You have more to gain by giving it a go. I also suggest, going beyond an email (which is a must) and either walk in (imagine that - you'd be remembered) or mail in a copy. It's old school; however as no one is doing it, you'd stand out. Ps....are you confident in your resume? How is looks, flows and markets 'YOU'? Cheers, Paula
Hey Kelly, Have you sent a followup via email about your original application submission?
I haven’t emailed. I can see when it was last updated, so I know it was received. I can call the department to try to find out who the hiring manager is, but I’m concerned about going outside the proper channels and getting myself eliminated.
Kelly, The following worked for me in a former role:
Email the hiring manager with your resume, saying that you applied on September 23, are resending your CV to ensure receipt, summarizing what makes you a strong fit, and saying that you would be excited to come in for an interview to learn more about the department’s needs, supplying your contact info.
I think that this demonstrates that you are polite and proactive,
Thanks! That sounds like a good plan, and I don’t think it would step on anyones toes at the university.
