Disconcerting Rejection
I have been looking to leave my current role for a while now and make a career transition. I was excited because I finally got an interview, which was supposed to be at noon today. Then at 9:30 PM last night, I got this very odd email
"I again want to thank you for meeting with me last Friday regarding the [omitted] position. After further discussion with the team today and reviewing the key strengths for this position, we are going to move in a different direction and will be re-posting the opening. I will be sending you a cancellation for the scheduled meetings for tomorrow.
Best regards to you in your future opportunities and I hope your final goes well on Wednesday.
Thank you and take care,"
I'm not sure what to make of this. I'm concerned that such a last minute cancellation means something came up on an internet search or something that I'm unaware of? Am I reading into this too much? Is it possible the HR rep and hiring manager were misaligned and met at 9PM?
I believe something has come up and they had to change the job requirements. It's not about you, it's about the position they need to fill up. It happened to me once: they canceled the interview and I found out later they didn't have the budget anymore for a new hire, so they decided to give the new role to an "internal candidate".
Sounds like there was a budget meeting or someone quit and the role had to be completely reprioritized.
I'm betting they met earlier in the day, and as the hiring manager was checking their calendar before they signed off for the night, they realized they had forgotten to cancel the call with you.
I'm so sorry this happened to you, but, as personal as it seems, remember everyone is looking out for themselves.
I'm sure you'll find something amazing.
Good luck on your finals!
