I’m looking to change from retail sales to Talent Acquisition.
I’ve been told this shouldn’t be a difficult move but the lack of experience is proving difficult to overcome. Anyone have any advice?
Danielle - this came up in my LinkedIn feed today and I thought of you - not sure where you are located geographically, no remote for this:

Thank you! I connected to both posters and added my information to Kwaku’s post.

One thing would be to write your resume highlighting your transferrable skills. You could look for internships in Talent Acquisition or similar entry-level roles in the industry so as to her your foot in.
The main thing to remember when you're switching careers, at any time and no matter where you're coming from or where you're going, is that you DO have job experience. It doesn't matter if you're getting into UX/UI and you've never formally held a design job in your life. What you should focus on are your transferable skills.
When you look at TA jobs, what are they asking for? For example, if their JD says "2+ years corporate recruiting experience in a fast-paced and high volume environment", how can you relate your experience in retail to that? It be could something like "Worked X years in fast-paced retail environment accomplishing ABC" (make sure it's something tangible that an interviewer will immediately understand).
If you had any part in hiring/interviewing, absolutely put that on your resume. "Interviewed X number of candidates, hiring Y team members in Z months/years."
And remember, job descriptions are always wish lists. If you feel like you can accomplish the job, apply for it anyway :)
I would try a recruiting agency - sometimes, they're willing to train newbies.
If you can't get a position as a recruiter, consider a position as a Recruiting Coordinator. It can be a great way to get your foot in the door.
Why do you want to become a recruiter?
Thank you so much for the advice. I’ve never heard of a Recruiting Coordinator before so I will look into that position.
I want to become a recruiter because as a store manager in a retail location, I assisted with the recruiting process and I really enjoyed it. I loved helping people find a new career. I throughly enjoyed every moment from reading resumes to interviewing candidates. I felt like I could truly make a difference and give someone new a chance to find a place to grow as an individual.
GOOD LUCK!
When you were in retail did you hold positions where you hired, train, and developed teams?
To get your foot in the door you may want to try to big companies such as Robert Half to gain the skills and then potentially branch out from there. You may also want to look at retail companies that have recruiters - as that would be an easier transition and very transferrable with your skills!
I did actually help with recruiting. I had my resume professionally done by a recruiter with a recruiting role in mind, however, I don’t get the interview.
I just looked up Robert Half. I can’t believe how many positions they have posted! I will definitely contact them tomorrow. Thank you so very much!
