Should I take a Job I'm not excited about bc of pandemic

I've been out of work since August 2020, and I've been aggressively looking. I left my job thinking I can pivot to the fintech space/biz ops role given my many transferable skills (from investment management). But it's been difficult, so I'm back at exploring roles similar to the role I left. I've been interviewing with one company that is going through similar chaos my last firm went through, but branding it as a "rebuild". They really like my resume, and I know I can go in to help change things for the better. I'm just worried about another chaotic/toxic environment AND the possibility of never getting out of type of role. But I can't go on another quarter without working. If I move on with this role, should I just take it, and reevaluate after the pandemic eases up and the job market is less uncertain (maybe in a year or two)?

I would take it AND keep looking. This way you can demonstrate to your IDEAL employer later that you found a job during a pandemic, did great at it and would bring that same ferocity to your next role.

Take it and keep looking . It’s tough out there, I’ve had friends laid off 2-3x’s during this pandemic . Take care of yourself first. unless, you have health insurance and 1-2 years salary . Right now if you get Covid , healthcare is VERY expensive, and some insurance doesn’t cover it all. Think about those things before your passion right now. I hope I’m not callous, just trying to look out for you

Why not starting this new job and see if you like it? You can always look for a better one later, but in the meantime at least you have a salary, you improve your skills and you add a job experience in your resume.

These are really good questions. It sounds like you are concerned about the culture. Are there specific questions that you can ask to parse that out? I also hear that you are in a difficult position because you have been out of work for so long. Do you have any other "irons in the fire?" You need to decide what is most important to you and keep that in the forefront of the decision that you make. If that decision is to take the job, then keep your intention (have employment) at the top of mind when you get frustrated until a reasonable exit point presents to you. Best of luck and keep us posted!

Here's what I tell my clients: be willing to take yourself off the job market for a minimum of 1 year when you start a new job. If you think you can do that with this position, then I would go for it.

I love this advice - a year can feel like an eternity for a poor fit. Thank you for this!
