Design Darlings

Hi Design Darlings

I'm new to this group. I have studied graphic design since undergrad and have a certificate in one as well. I have a to of experience in administrative work, but I am having a hard time breaking into the design field. I have applied to a ton of jobs and internships online and have not been really getting any interviews or responses. Is there any tips on how I can move forward in this career field?

As much as Designers dislike having to work in design-adjecent workplaces, maybe try starting there instead. Find a high-end showroom to employ you and work your way up from there. Best of luck to you in your job search.

Hi Hannah, agree getting a foot in the door is challenging. Have you tried the design mentoring group ADPList? It's free to join and there are design mentors who may be able to give you advice. https://www.adplist.org/

Hi Hannah! As someone who has struggled with this early on in my career (from admin to design). I know this can be very difficult to breakthrough. Have you had someone review your portfolio and resume by a hiring manager or a design professional in the field? Attending a design review is very important to get honest feedback to improve your portfolio . Have you taken on any freelance work? If so, you can add this to your resume that you do freelance which adds design experience to your resume. If you haven't done any freelance work or don't know where to get started, you can start with volunteer to do design for a non-profit to get experience for your resume. Another huge thing - do more personal work to keep adding to your portfolio. I find that personal work also shows what you're really passionate about. If you'd like me to review your portfolio and/or resume, I'd be happy to give any feedback.
