Feeling a little discouraged!
I work in the costume design industry and recently I've been experiencing a lot of sexism with remote contacts & managment (from both men and women). It's a little discouraging because I've heard a lot of the design industry falls into those same ruts as well. For those of you that have found a great company to work for, how did you find design opportunities in a good environment?
Try, https://www.peopleperhour.com or https://www.fiverr.com, it's for freelancers. good Luck
I was just thinking last week when it was the anniversary of Women getting the right to vote and all i could think was “Wow! We really haven’t come too much further.” I’ve been an interior designer in many areas of interior design, for over 20 years and I’d say 9 out of 10 of the places I’ve worked at were subtly chauvinistic, a few not so subtle. I am somewhat of an outspoken person so I let the person know when I encounter it and speaking out has done me no good. My work is extremely important to me and I just wanted to be treated the same as the men for the same work and even better sometimes. I’m now 50 and try not to stress as much. Whatever comes my way in the form of sexism, I don’t react immediately anymore. Taking a few minutes and thinking about it from every side has let me address the situation calmly and more effectively and I can once in a while see the results.
As a fellow Interior Designer, I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment.
While I'm still looking for employment in this industry, I have encountered nothing but sexism. Even to the point that while my spouse and I BOTH were freelancing in the industry, when we were at networking events and introductions were being made, I was CONSTANTLY told " . . . oh, you're just the wife . . ." Um, NO, I'm also a freelancer who has worked equally as hard (if not harder) to accomplish career goals.
