Women in Consulting

Hello! I am stepping into the world of consulting now after 30 years of operations, insurance negotiations, strategy, and compliance leadership inside of corporations.

I'm wondering how do you all concisely articulate your lengthy & diverse career experience into a simple but informative summary so others know what you do?

Focus on the results you have provided in your past roles, strategy thinking, and numbers.

Hello! Industry buzzwords is my answer. Take the skills you have and see if you can break them down into a single word or short phrase. Then align those words with the industry you wish to get into. For example, here's what I currently have on my CV [I'm trying to obtain a PT position teaching in addition to my FT job]: PROFESSIONAL SUMMARY Business professional with 35+ years of experience in Account Management, Project Leadership, Analytics, and Client Engagement. Experienced educator specializing in English language instruction and academic coaching for college students. Currently pursuing second master’s for specialization in English (focus on CALL). I saw someone answer with "ChatGPT". I happen to love ChatGPT - and had her (yeah, I'm one of THOSE type of people who genders neutral things. ?) help me create my current CV. I admit, it's gotten me noticed more than my old resume did! Wishing you nothing but the best...

Write it all down, as long as you need it to be. Then start crossing out phrases and words that aren't needed. And keep doing that over and over, sometimes coming back to it the next day. Eventually you'll have an elevator speech of the essentials that sounds like you. THEN take it to a pro to help refine it further.

I second the AI assist. In your prompt, describe the type of consulting you are going into and how you will help others/organizations. Then, attach any documents you have regarding your career experience, and ask AI to generate multiple versions/angles of a summary. Let it know which versions you like and ask it to keep refining until you are satisfied.

My suggestion would be to ask "concisely articulate my career experience into a simple but informative 1 page summary" into Claud, ChatGPT or other and let that be a starting point. Ask follow up questions in AI to get it closer to what you want. After that, copy the information into a Word document and go over it (Without AI help at this time). Make sure what it says your experience and knowledge correctly reflect what you do. Adjust it into your own words. The goal is to have AI do the heavy lifting but not have the AI look and feel when presenting it to others. Hope this helps.
