Suggestions for negotiating a starting salary.
I have been offered a new position with an agency that seems pretty amazing. The downside is that the starting salary is below what I have made over the last year.
I will receive an increase once I receive a professional license. But that could be a ways away. And even with licensure, the increase in salary would still not meet what I’m making now.
The benefits of the agency, and the agency itself are of value. However, I don’t want to start a new job that will cause a financial hardship right away for me and my kiddos.
The agency loves me and was impressed by my interview - to the point that they have immediate feedback to the hiring
manager about extending an offer ASAP. I hope that bodes well for me in negotiating a higher salary.
Anyone have suggestions for negotiating a starting salary?
Thank you!
You know what you want to make, what you need to make and what you can afford to accept. If you are looking for a higher salary, simply reply to the offer letting them know that you are really excited about the opportunity and hope to be able to join the team, however, your minimum base salary requirement is$XX. I would throw in a couple of reminders of the other qualifications you bring to the position, like training or experience to help prove why you are worth more money. If they can't meet your needs, then it's not the job for you.
Good point.
This is simple...you know your worth and the company is not going to meet that worth. Don't make the leap. Never leave one job on the hopes of what another job "might" offer. Best of Luck
Exactly...
it's like dating that new partner knowing they don't cut it, but you see "so much potential" and your needs are never met. It doesn't hurt to ask for the salary you want, but I wouldn't stop the search. If they can't meet you where you want, don't settle. Keep it moving! You got this!
If they like you, your skill set, negotiate just might get it. Ask and you shall receive.
Do your homework and come prepared. Is your current compensation in line with the market? If so provide well founded market information tied to the value your bring to the role of experience and education and experience and expertise. This is how you make a compelling argument for a better offer.
I'd say do some quick research and see what other companies in your area are paying for that position. Look at the responsibilities of those job positions and compare them to your job offer. If they are similar say that the industry standard for your type of job is "$$$" and you'd like to receive a competitive offer.
