Working on Resume
Anyone else working on updated their resume and finding it extremely difficult to put into words all the things you've done? My job has so many parts to it and I can't seem to get it down on the paper. Any help would be appreciated.
Can you give an example of the kind of skill set you are talking about and how you would have fleshed it out on paper..
I am trying to refresh my resume and this will help...
I've actually restructured my resume to list my experience by skill set rather than by job/position. I've found it easier to group the things I've done under the skill set headings and it does a better job representing me. I also think this format is easier for someone outside of my immediate area to get a better idea of what I'm capable of.
I'm glad you had success with that! In my coaching services and workshops, I share the strategy behind you might not want to group by skill in your resume though when applying to roles that require those skills.

great exercise to elicit more info from you about your experience. Caveat: I would advise against the "functional" resume template.

I agree. Everytime someone asks me what I do their eyes start to gloss over about 30 seconds in to it. I'm anxious to hear how others get past this so I can "clean up" my resume and get my elevator speech down to 1-2 minutes.
Sounds like you need a fresh take. Focus on the parts of the job you want to do more of in your next role and the parts you love. Share that! I'm not super passionate about filling out forms to hire people, but I do love helping people move forward and find their next gig. In recruiting and onboarding, I get to help people at a crucial and exciting time. :)
I can definite relate to this. My job does not translate very well to other positions outside my company and trying to get all the various things I do down in a coherent, concise manner yet keep the resume to less than a small novel is very frustrating. It also makes job searching difficult as I have skill sets that cross many categories but I may only have one or two of the 'desired' traits for each position. I'm afraid I can't be of any help but I would definitely appreciate seeing the advise you receive about this topic.
transferrable skills are great to have! You must think empathetically on how to market yourself.
