What does a good resume look like?
I have been in the military for 25 years and I feel really out of touch with what is needed in the civilian sector. It is difficult to trust any one source for opinions and guidance on what direction I should go with preparing my next one. Any thoughts or ideas are appreciated.
Thanks in advance, ladies!
Amy
Joanna,
What a nice offer! I may take you up on getting some help over coffee and zoom. My friend has a staffing agency and she said she contracts with a professional resume writer for her higher level clients. I have started some research in that direction too.
I have had civilian experience while serving in the Air National Guard as an ICU RN, Flight RN etc, but since transitioning into HR after my MBA was complete. I have 22 years Medical and almost 4 in HR. Thanks again for messaging. We are all stronger together!
Cheers,
Amy
^great starts! If you literally have nothing, then use a template. But military transition is unique. There are many initiatives and employers support the idea of hiring vets. However- if your resume is unclear, then that's not the reviewer's fault. Be sure you do these:
1) communicate CLEARLY and unmistakably that you are a veteran. Sometimes repeatedly and in various ways. This is a PRO for hiring you because of those initiatives.
2) communicate how your military experience translates to the job in question SPECIFICALLY and sometimes even verbatim from the job desc.
3) NETWORK! With both similar and different circles from yourself.

The first step would be to speak with others who have successfully transitioned from the military to civilian positions--even better if they are in the same general field as you. They will be able to give you pointers and help you translate what you did in the military into civilian terminology. Without that, your transferable skills won't mean anything to your prospective employers.
Lynne,
You make a great point in learning from others with similar situations. I have a few different formats, but am not up to date with current civilian preferences. I appreciate your response with advice.

Amy
You're very welcome.
Have a great rest of your weekend.
Hi Amy - I have a template that I provide friends who are looking for resume help if you want to send me your email [email protected]. The important piece for you will be the skills that are transferrable to civilian life (there are a lot) and then mold your resume towards how you want to use that experience. Hopefully that makes sense. Happy to help if you want to send me an email. I don't see a way to attach a document here. Best, Casey
Casey,
Thank you. I appreciate your comments and will reach out through email.

Amy
