Functional Resumes

Do functional resume's really work? Each time I have submitted a functional resume I have been asked to rewrite it as a chronological. I would love some opinions!

I have strong opinions on the functional resume. I'd recommend against it as it is not the expected way to view info. Use the spirit of the functional and format it like a chronological! I go over some ways to approach this in my workshops and coaching. :)

I am frequently on hiring committees at my job and we always prefer a chronological resume. Often, we have to sort through 60-100 resumes and we need to be able to easily see if you meet the work experience and educational criteria. If I have to spend 10 minutes trying to figure out where you've worked and for how long, I give up.

I never use a functional resume unless I have done some serious networking and I only use them when my direct experience is not my most recent. I might do a combined resume and highlight "key accomplishments" as a section towards the top and then put fewer accomplishments under each position.
