Seeking advice: Applying for roles w/in the same company
Hi all,
I have been following a particular company for about a year now, and keeping an eye on their job postings. To date, if I see something I am interested in I have been applying online.
I did go through a full interview process back in February 2020 but did not end up getting an offer, the others have been rejections w/o an interview.
My question is: is it appropriate to apply for multiple roles w/in the same company over the course of a year? How many times is too many? Do internal recruiters generally keep your resume on file (like they say they do?) to contact you in the future for a role that may be a good fit?
Thank you for your help!
Hi Sarah, it depends. Sometimes they see you as a good candidate but it's not the right time or they want to hire another person but they still consider you a good profile for a different position, maybe for the future. It happened to me in the past: I interviewed for a position, they hired another candidate but then contacted me after 3 months because they decided to add another member to that team.
Are you sending in the exact same resume for each job? If so, yes, that's a problem. They already have it on file. Hitting the "Apply" button just annoys the recruiter. Instead, network via LinkeIn. Connect with people that work there. Get insider tips. Make friends.
Make sure, though, that you aren't filling their slush pile on a regular basis.
Cheers

this^! Always tailor. even if they know you. Don't spam the system like a bot. Applying to a handful of roles at a time that are in 1-2 areas that are appropriate and logical makes sense to the recruiter view. You do not want to be seen as someone who blindly applies to every posting. e.g.: if an early career professional were to apply to an EA role and an Account Asst. that makes sense. They would probably also apply to multiple EA roles, if posted. They should DEF not apply to the VP of Sales. I hope that helps!
Did you get feedback after the full interview process about why it was a no? At my current company we do consider at the end of an interview whether a candidate might be a good fit for another open role or a possible future opportunity at the company. Some candidates are a 'no' for reasons that mean that other roles at the company likely would not be a fit either, while others are interviewed and even hired for other roles months later. Any feedback from the recruiter should give some insight!
Thanks Meg! I did request feedback after the interviews but unfortunately none was provided. It could be that I just was not the right "cultural" fit for this company so maybe I need to take the hint and move focus elsewhere.
that's kind of offensive. in this day, they should not be cloaking in that way.
