When and how to negotiate salary

I have never negotiated a salary. But, this has done me a huge disservice and I have learned I was making significantly less than peers in previous positions. I started a new job this year and started off at a reasonable salary. I don’t want to have to change jobs to make what I deserve, but I am not sure how to leverage other offers to negotiate with my current employer. When and how is it best to do this? I don’t want to piss off my current company. Thanks for any input you can offer!

While salary negotiation is not my specialty, here's some general ideas: You could ask! Asking puts your employer on notice that maybe you are looking and they should think about how much they value you. You could use this time to think about how and why you're worth more. Even if you don't want to change jobs, dipping a toe into the market will help you estimate your current value for similar roles. Who knows? You might find a posting that makes you change your mind too.
