Freelance Writers

Looking to get into freelance writing for a few extra bucks.

I hesitated to join the group as I'm not 'really' a writer now, but do legal and compliance work (yawn) for a manufacturer. But I do have a Masters in English, have done A LOT of business and technical writing, and believe I'm fairly good at it - if not creatively, at least clearly (stop judging my writing!). How do I get started? I only want to fill up some evenings and weekends as I work full time now.

You might want to check first with small local newspapers, including those for churches/other religious institutions and cities within a city. They might need some extra help and be a way to get started. Once you have proven yourself with a small paper, you could apply for better-paid positions.

There are plenty of websites where you can get side gigs. Fiverr is great for freelance gigs. https://www.fiverr.com/

I'm not a writer, but like you, I write a lot for work (marketing, technical requirements, instructions, UX writing), and if I wanted to get into freelance writing, this is what I would do: -I would find the niche that I want to write in (small business email copy or ghostwriting blog posts or whatever you want to do) I would then join Upwork or one of the hundreds of other freelance offerings of my writing services. If I felt that I needed some more time to sharpen up my writing skills, I would: - I would write as if I had clients - I would write customer emails for a local bakery (even if they weren't a client). I would find places that I could write for free. I would volunteer to write for a local school or charity. I would volunteer at my local library to help non-English speakers write cover letters). -I would create an inexpensive personal website (Squarespace) to publish my writing. If I needed to learn more about best practices for whatever market I wanted to write for, I would spend time on youtube and get up to speed. Good luck!
