I am feeling pretty defeated in my job search right now.
I have been receiving many rejections but in my Artistic life its been going well. (pay is coming but not enough). I don't know what to do? I live between Boston and Baton Rouge, am a parent and spouse. I don't know what to do? Go back to school switch careers or keep sending resumes? I am in my 40's and slightly freaking out.
Sorry to hear about all the rejections! But take a pause and be careful about the decision to go back to school. It can be very costly - tuition + time spent not working. And often after graduating you're back to square 1 as a new grad without experience.
It sounds like there's something not working in your job search strategy. If you're feeling defeated and not getting offers usually it's one of the following issues:
A) You haven't clarified your high-value skillset and what your dream job actually is. If you're trying to fit yourself into job descriptions for the paycheque it will be very difficult to compete with those who are actually passionate about the position.
B) You're relying on job boards. Over 80% of jobs are in the hidden market and most of the jobs posted have a ton of competition, making it next to impossible to get in.
C) Your branding is outdated. You need a new economy CV, cover, LinkedIn profile, etc.
It's hard to know what the sticking point is without more detail, but could any of those be applicable to you?
Hang in there. Things will get better. When you don’t get the job it just means it wasn’t for you. Have you tried a career coach? Do you get feedback as to reasons why? Ask your interviewer for feedback either way.
Hi! I know how frustrated you are. I have found that being very specific in the roles you are targeting helps the most. So for example-if you want to be a DEI corporate trainer for a company then make sure your LinkedIn, resume, trainingsthat you take/list are geared toward that. Although you may have an interest in many things, hone in on what you want to do the most and immerse yourself in that. It’s great to have multiple interests that are transferable but make sure you are displaying to recruiters, hiring managers, and interviewers a very clear picture how you are best for that one role. For me, finding a mentor in the industry and role that I want to be in helped tremendously at bridging the gaps when it came to articulating my transferable skills in interviews. Hope this is helpful and good luck! Don’t give up— unless the job calls for an advanced degree- you don’t need to go back to school per say. You can change careers no matter your age without it! Age brings tons of wisdom that schooling can never teach!
well, first of all, what is your professional field? there are jobs out there, but maybe your resume or approach needs a little tweak? Commuting between Boston and BR is crazy challenging! Is there any way to settle in one?
I come from a trainer/teacher/facilitator background. I have worked in public health, taught in schools & colleges. I have a son in school so will be in Baton Rouge during school year...I am in Boston for summer. I fly back when I have engagements as I consult remotely in the DEI realm as well, Have redone my resume multiple times. So frustrating!
Have you thought of tech training? Either professional development (if your background is here) or software implementation? Are you on Tiktok? There's a #exteacher group that helps teachers refocus their skills.
