Hi everyone . I am seeking a career change from education to finance.
I have no experience and I did not get an opportunity to do an internship for this new career. I am a preschool teacher who wants to be an accountant. Any advice or is anyone going through a similar transition?
Hey there, congratulations on career changes, I know it can be a scary transition. As a hiring manager, I have hired a few teachers changing careers. About 50% of them work out, and this is what I have learned - Have an "elevator speech" ready about why you want to change as well as what you do (related to your current job or related to your potential new career) on what you do during the summer months. I would say the 50% of teachers who did not work out did not have anything work-related they did during the summer, or they had specific hobby activities they saved their summers for. While there's nothing wrong with that, I believe these folks missed their summers "off" and that was a contributing factor as to why they did not last a year at the firm I was with at the time. Which is sad, because I think most teachers have a super work ethic (and there was never an issue with their work while they were in the positions I hired them for), and I personally LOVE to hire teachers looking to make a career change. But my interview questions have changed to add questions about summer breaks and their plans for the future.
thank you Kimberly for the advice. i work at a private preschool with no summers off. I am only off on the five major holidays of the year.
That's so exciting! Here's an article about accounting that might be a helpful overview — https://fairygodboss.com/career-topics/what-does-a-cpa-do.
