Career Changers!

Not sure which direction to go in-

Hi, I was a professional Video Editor for major News and Entertainment channels in NYC for 12 years. Then I decided to stay at home with the kids. 18 years later, I find myself living in Texas (came down for the ex's job) working retail and can't seem to get even an Administration job or interview. I have countless hours of volunteering and great computer skills. I don't think I want to go back into editing, (I am now 50 years old) due to it has changed so much. I am thinking of Human Resources- do I need a degree for that? What about starting as a HR Assistant? I'm divorced and need to make it on my own now. Thanks.

Hi Bethanne, first off, way to go for trying to move into a field you are interested in! And for reaching out here with some questions! As long as you have a bachelor's degree, it's probably going to be less of a question of having the right degree, and more about being able to demonstrate that you have the necessary skills and to brand yourself so that they see you as someone who makes sense for the role. (So that potentially could include getting some kind of additional experience, taking a class or getting a certificate, depending on what you can show now. It might be a big scary step, but could you reach out to your friends and asks if anyone has a friend in HR they could connect you to, and see if they'd be willing to talk with you about what they'd be looking for? Also, this podcast with Lisa on rebranding yourself for a career change might be helpful! https://www.macslist.org/podcasts/setting-goals/how-to-rebrand-yourself-when-changing-careers-with-lisa-lewis
