Welcome! Let's get to know each other!
Hey FGB-ers! It's so great to create the inaugural group for people considering a career change! Comment on this post to share your name, where you're based, what you've previously done for your line of work, and what kind of ideas you're kicking around for a potential career change! AND -- note that this community and conversation will be private and confidential to FGB, so absolutely no sharing info or details outside this group unless you have explicit and full consent from the poster.
I'm Liz, in Central GA. I have worked in Higher Ed - International Education my entire career (all 14 years of it...) and need a change, but I'm having a hard time breaking out of education. I want to work in travel or cultural training, and have a lot of experience working with people from all over the world and sending people all over the world (I've traveled a good deal, myself).
Welcome, Liz! It sounds like, based on your past, you've got the transferrable international/travel experiences but might be struggling with how to display those effectively to future employers. Does that feel right?
It's more that I don't know where to start looking for appropriate positions...
Gotcha! Is it that you don't know the exact positions you're looking for, or that you don't know where to find them listed?

Hi, I am currently based in Portsmouth VA but I currently work in Norfolk VA as a PT Substitute Teacher. I have worked on and off as a tutor and substitute teacher since 2003. I am originally from the NYC area where I've worked in various industries such as banking, production, factory, and administrative work. I've also done FT seasonal work as an Assessment Evaluator. I am 59 and I am at a crossroads in my career between IT and Finance. I am seeking a career change, but I am looking to find my passion, my niche. I am also seeking growth in my career. I enjoy helping people.
Wow, Scott -- sounds like you've explored a LOT! When you think about this crossroads, what are you feeling most pulled towards for your next move?
Hi! I work in Raleigh, NC for a large public school system. I work with Facilities & Design supporting the project managers. I am responsible for keeping the contract and cost items current and accurate in our project management software and getting the hard copies approved and executed. I have over 15 years working in the construction industry as project support and I have 10 years experience as an executive assistant. I am 57 years old and have no clue what I want to do next!! LOL My current job is a dead-end job, has a toxic culture, and pays substantially less than I was making. I took it after being unemployeed for 2 years during the big recession. I've been here 5 years, but I am actively looking for another job. I would like to get an EA or AA position in a different industry just to do something different!! So, I'm excited about the possibilities and look forward to earning my old salary again!! LOL
Welcome, Kim! It's wonderful to have you. Your desire to find a new opportunity with more runway and "room to groove" makes total sense, and I can also appreciate the fear (and vulnerability) of not feeling crystal clear on what those next steps are yet. But, especially with the clarity you have on the things you *don't* want in your next role, you're in the right place!
Hi - I know I'm a little late to comment but just joined and am excited about this group! I'm in Nashville, TN and have previously only worked in the non-profit sector (YMCA, healthcare). I'm in a position currently that has become stagnant and, quite frankly, I'm bored. I'm currently interviewing for positions in the for-profit world but am a bit nervous about the inevitable culture change. Also, I tend to be an introvert so I'm trying to find positions that will challenge me to be more outgoing but won't overstep my social bandwidth. Looking forward to any insights this group might have to offer!
Welcome! I hear you on wanting to keep some of the good things about the non-profit world while also getting more room to grow -- and as a fellow introvert, I really appreciate wanting to protect your energy (while still being around the humans). You're in great company here!
I'm in CT. I currently am and have worked in the power industry in various jobs for the past 30 years. I've held positions as an administrative assistant, shipping, marketing, sales, inventory and as a parts service specialist/project manager. I truly enjoy the customer service area or anywhere I can help someone out. I think I'm just tired of the power industrial industry and looking to be in something a little more exciting then power plants. :)
Welcome! It's great to have you, and I hear you on feeling fatigued around energy after 30 years -- and it's exciting to know that you love customer service and ways to be genuinely helpful in other people's lives. Welcome to the journey!
Thank you!
