Introvert in Sales?
Good day. I am an Introvert (INFJ) and a company would like to hire me as a sales person. I have, however, avoided sales my whole life. Yet, this company sees something in me and believes I can do it.
The job would be 100% commission, however, I have been out of work for some time and money is dire. I'm feeling like I should bite at this first opportunity.
In your experience and knowledge, can an introvert be successful in direct sales?
American as far as I know. It is IRS form 1099.
1099 is for contract workers. You will want to also look into putting aside taxes and paying them quarterly. I made the mistake of taking a 1099 job and thought I could pay my taxes when I filed my taxes but I was hit with a penalty. I also believe that as an introvert you can easily modify what you do to fit your personality and you will be a much better judge whether a lead is in fact HOT! You will spend more time assessing and planning before the actual execution which in my humble opinion is a GREAT quality in a salesperson. Good Luck!
Is 1099 Canadian or American?
The company has a CRM database of leads over the past decades... current and past, but cold-calls and developing my own leads would be the mandate. The manager is supportive. I'm not familiar with the term 1099, is that North American-wide? I'll go look.
@KBinCo, will this company provide the leads to you, or will you have to prospect on your own for the leads. I ask only because I was in pharma for 30+ years and was given info by the company, and was an employee. Upon leaving, I too needed money and took a 1099 (100% commission) job. I had to fend for myself in finding leads, never-mind that it behooved them to provide a customer list so as not to lose those customers if I didn't know about them. The Sales Manager was a jerk, and said I should know how to "fish". I hung on for 6 months and left. Additionally, if you are 100% commission, will you be a 1099 rep? If so, DO NOT let them treat you like an employee, because you are NOT. You are your own boss. I actually created an LLC so the checks went to it, not me. Good Luck to you.
Hi Alikatu! (Recruiter-turned-HR person here) I personally think introverts can be great sales people. The more you (really) listen to your prospective customer, the better. If you're in an industry in which the customer(s) may also be introverts, even better. You have to be comfortable style-shifting when needed. If you can do that - you can do it! What do you have to lose? :o)
Thank you very much. As an INFJ, I am a natural chameleon and adjust to a person's expectations within a conversation and mannerisms. I think the problem for me is, though, to "consciously" make adjustments in order to bring about a desired result. To purposefully ask questions in order to direct the outcome. It sounds like "not such a bad thing" typing this out here. haha
