Marketing majors/industry
How did you decide what sector you wanted to be in? I am having trouble deciding if I want to do public, private, or non profit and what I want to specialize in.
If you can get internships, I recommend doing that. That experience helps to shape you regardless of what niche you go into.
I see many entry-level candidates who emphasize their social media skills (so, you spend a lot of time on your phone...). As a hiring manager, I'm looking for people who understand integrated marketing, multi-channel marketing, and who have project management experience. Show me your spreadsheet skills!
If you are excited about non-profits, consider B Corp agencies that might work with like-minded clients.
Good luck in your search!
I'm having a hard time getting internship as the majority of them are asking for skills that I don't have yet, do you recommend doing mock portfolios to stand out?
Careful with the nonprofit sector. Funding (or lack thereof) dictates a LOT of how people are hired/terminated. If a line of funding suddenly dries up, through no fault of the organization, positions are cut. If you have a partner/other support system where one income is doable (even if it's temporary) then the nonprofit sector may work.
But a lot of nonprofit orgs are very nervous in this political climate.
If you are a new grad, I would suggest in this market, you find a position of interest in any industry. Consider what you are interested in, such as logistics, finance, supply chain, HR, etc. Then explore companies in different industry verticals. If you are going to be a new grad, contact your career center office to guide you as well. Good luck to you!
