What type of training towards a career in IT can I get that also compliments my HR background and Degree?

If you feel the need for a certification to show the shift then a CompTia certification would be good. Maybe something like IT fundamentals and then expand from there. If you want to just improve your situation using IT related tools then I would suggest focusing on the Python programming language. That would give you the ability to parse HR data amongst other things.
