Utilizing a Network
In August 2019, my husband died after having worked for more than 35 years for his company. Prior to our relationship, I also spent some time at the company as a temp and was offered a position. I launched into my professional career of social work but am now seeking a career pivot. I am trying to get hired by his highly reputable company and having been using his network for support. I got a preliminary interview but they decided to go in a different direction. Now, I am trying for other positions but the network may not be working anymore for whatever reasons. My friend asked why don't I go for broke as my husband did several personal favors for leadership over his tenure at the company. The suggestion is that I send a letter to the owner's son or the EVP inquiring about a position and enclosing my resume. Any thoughts on this suggestion?
As a career coach, I always tell folks that you miss 100% of the shots you don't take, so I'd encourage you in the direction of courage and boldness! However, I'm curious if you have more direct contact info for the son or EVP -- a phone call or virtual meeting might be a better format for you to make your ask.
