Transition into Human Resources

Hi All, I am here because I want to learn how to transition from business management to human resources. I was recently laid off and have spent the last month trying to figure out what I want to do next. The business mgmt. role required about 30% 'human capital' management, which really means building headcount plans, vetting hiring proposals and candidate offers and doing compensation analysis. I realize this was my favorite part of my role and I learned a lot about hiring/severance and employment laws. How do I address the lack of formal HR knowledge on my resume? I am more than willing to take a step back in my career to make this transition. Any advice??

Hi Monica - Kristen gave you great advice above! The only thing I'd add from the perspective of a career coach are that HR tends to be a more picky line of work when it comes to getting specific credentials (degrees, certifications from SHRM, etc), so for making the first move in your career change I'd look for HR-adjacent role titles like in organizational development, learning and development, employee engagement, human capital management, change management, employee performance coach, etc. Once you get your foot in the door with that kind of job title, it becomes easier to move into HR business partner-esque roles. However, at companies that are more progressive/modern, there are still opportunities to get into HR directly without any academic/professional certifications, so don't give up just yet!

Thanks for this tip Lisa! I will look for some quasi-HR roles like you mentioned. Very helpful.
