I'm new to working from home and worried about losing my momentum.
After switching from a career in law to marketing (which is a long story, trust me!), I now find myself working 100% remotely for the first time in my career. There's a lot that I really love about it (no commute and I'm writing this from my couch in sweats, for starters!) but there's a part of me that fears my career is going to lose momentum if I'm rarely or never spending time with my boss or colleagues in person. The quality of my work should speak for itself, but at some point, is my absence going to make me seem dispensable?? How do I get past this fear and make sure I'm seen as an active, present member of the team?
Maybe try to regularly schedule skype or zoom meetings with members of your team to update others on projects, tasks, etc. or just to see what each other is on and might need input from others.
I know what you mean! When I took a remote position with my last company, I asked my company to pay for a seat at a coworking space for this reason. Some days I'd work from home still, but for about half the week, I'd have the feeling of being at an office. It helped a ton, including with my sense of motivation!
I've been WFH 100% for 12 years, and still haven't "mastered" it. I start my day like my co-workers - between 9-9:30a. I exercise before that time, mostly b/c if I don't do it early, I'll never do it. I also "take lunch" like everyone else, but I tend to do errands in my neighborhood so my weekends are free. I can throw a load of laundry in, make healthier lunches and snacks and save $ on dry-cleaning, $$$ lunches/coffee breaks. I haven't missed a deadline or a conference call. I don't miss the office schmoozing/time-wasting gossip and stale break room "treats". It's not for everyone, but I know I can't go back to a 9-to-5 life. You'll figure it out! Best of luck....
I work from home often, too, so we're in the same boat! I try to make my presence in the office impactful when I'm there. I don't want my presence to be measured by how many cups of coffee I make in the kitchen or how often I stride to the bathroom. It matters more to me that I contribute to company events when I am there and share meaningful ideas with my coworkers which can be done from wherever!
